Leslie Lynn (Murphy) Torres

It is with great sadness that the family of Leslie Torres announces her passing at the age of 74. Leslie Lynn Murphy Torres was born in Stillwater, Oklahoma on June 11, 1943 to Andy and Zola Murphy. Leslie spent her childhood and formative years in the small town of Glencoe. She enjoyed spending time in her parent’s drugstore and playing with friends in her quaint neighborhood. As she grew older, she became highly involved in extra curriculars at school. She was active in FHA, an avid panther basketball player, and held class offices. Leslie was a GHS graduate of the class of 1961. She would later marry her high school sweetheart. Throughout her colorful life, Leslie traveled to multiple locations in the United States. She lived in France for three years where in 1964, she gave birth to her eldest son. She accompanied her sister to Germany and Italy and would later spend time on the island country of Jamaica. Later, in 1968, Leslie gave birth to her one and only daughter. After the dissolution of her first marriage, Leslie worked tirelessly to support her two children as a single mother. She held various positions such as working for the Oklahoma State Department of Vocational and Technical Education, the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority, and served as one of the only female employees of the Glencoe cotton gin, recording and transporting bales of cotton sometimes weighing as much as 500 lbs. Later, Leslie met Lazaro (Larry) Torres of San Antonio, Texas, while he was working on construction of Sooner Lake and she was toll operator on the Cimarron Turnpike. They were married and welcomed a son in 1982. She was finally afforded the opportunity to be a wife, mother, and homemaker. She worked tirelessly to maintain a loving and warm family and household. Leslie, throughout her life sacrificed much and endured times of struggle. Her faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ remained constant and steadfast. She was an active member of the Glencoe United Methodist Church up until her death. She served as Sunday School Superintendent for over 15 years, maintained the church marquee, taught Vacation Bible School, and assisted in the monthly community food pantry disbursements. Ever a devoted member of the Glencoe community, Leslie was a member of Eastern Star and a worthy matron, she was a member of the Floral Valley Club, wrote the weekly Glencoe news column for the Pawnee Chief, and served as an organizer of the Glencoe Founder’s Day celebration for a number of years. Leslie was a dedicated daughter, mother, grandmother, and friend to all who knew her. She brought light and life with her wherever she went. She will be remembered for her quick wit, wonderful sense of humor, infectious laugh, and faithfulness to friends and the Lord Jesus Christ.
