Algar William Horsechief was born March 7, 1938, in Pawnee, Oklahoma (OK), at the Pawnee Indian Hospital. After a lengthy battle of illness, he passed from this life on February 26, 2026, in Tulsa, OK. He was born to Delbert Horsechief, Sr. and Minnie Ruth Moses. Algar was a member of an elite remaining few among the Pawnee Nation, a full blood. He was of the Kitkehahki and Skidi bands. Algar was blessed to have been born into a large family having grown up with 6 brothers, Delbert Jr., Vance, Levi, Alexander, Lewis, Ellis, and 3 sisters, Adeline, Neva, and Susan Mae.
His maternal grandparents were Rebecca White and John Moses. His paternal grandparents were Spotted Horse and Lucy Running Eagle.
Algar was a lifelong resident of Quay and attended and graduated from Quay Public Schools. He was a lifelong mechanic and would become a professional painter. He was part of the Painters Union out of Tulsa, OK, and enjoyed traveling and going on jobs with his brothers in this profession. He loved to fish, work on cars and cheer on the Yale Bulldogs and Oklahoma Sooners.
He married Geneva Ruth Horsechief in the 1970s and welcomed her children Alex (Cubbie) and Mary. The union between Algar and Geneva would extend their family to include Edgar, William (Bill) and Shannon.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, 6 brothers and 2 sisters, son; Edgar and daughter; Shannon. He is survived by his loving sister; Susan Mae, and beloved sons; Bill and Cubbie.
Pallbearers will include: Mark Horsechief, Anthony Horsechief, Ronnie Moore, Steve Moore, Dallas Horsechief, Jordan Moore, and Pius Spotted Horsechief.
A prayer service will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026, and funeral services held on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at 10 AM at the Pawnee Nation’s Roamchief Building. Mr. Allen Moore will be in charge of the prayer and funeral services. Internment will be at the North Indian Cemetery in Pawnee, OK, and a Mourner’s Feast will be held immediately following internment.
The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to all who were a part of his journey and legacy. We share in the grief and loss but know he is smiling, whole, and walking again among our akitaru (relatives) and in the midst of our Creator.
