Robert Michael "Mike" Howell, 54, was born November 12, 1961 in Pawnee, Oklahoma. He passed from this world sometime between November 29 and December 11, 2015, in his apartment in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Mike's parents were the late Jesse Howell, Jr. and Geraldine Smith Howell. His maternal grandparents were the late Andy Krow and May Pratt Smith and paternal grandparents were the late Jesse and Harriett Esau Howell. Mike's great-grandmother was Bertha BlackEagle Pratt Shooter. His great-great-grandfather was Mark BlackEagle, US Army Pawnee scout.
Mike grew up in Pawnee and attended Pawnee Elementary School, Pawnee, Oklahoma and Concho Indian Boarding School, El Reno, Oklahoma; he attended high school at Sherman Indian High School, Riverside, California, and Fort Sill Indian School, Anadarko, Oklahoma. He also attended the Guthrie Job Corps, Guthrie, Oklahoma. He received his GED.
He was a cook, heavy equipment operator and heating/air conditioning technician. Mike also excelled at woodworking, and made a glass cabinet for both his late mother Geraldine and his aunt, the late Bertha Harder. He also made his sister Irene a cedar chest. Prior to her passing, Mike had helped his mother with her garden, planting seeds and helping with the Pawnee Nation seed preservation program. He was also a big Oklahoma State University football fan and had his favorite t-shirt ready for the next game.
Mike was also a member of the Oklahoma Army National Guard and took his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Mike wanted to re-enlist after the wars began in the Middle East, to once again protect and defend his country. He was a member of the Pawnee Indian Veterans organization, and for several years helped with raffles, fundraising and many duties that the organization required for their events. He also participated with honor guard duties in the Pawnee Homecoming parade and at other events. Mike was very proud of having served his country and of being a member of the Pawnee Indian Veterans.
Mike's first marriage was to Liz Cadue of San Carlos, Arizona. His second marriage was to Florissa Kanuho of Pawnee, Oklahoma. Mike's children are Brandon Kanuho and Jessica Liane Howell (deceased), Pawnee, Oklahoma; Steven Biggoose, Weatherford, Oklahoma; and Paigelyn, Paydon and Paxton Moore of Pawnee, Oklahoma.
Besides his six children, Mike is survived by his siblings, Jesse "Sonny" Howell, Jr., Lester Esau Howell, Gerald Dean Howell, Harold Gene Howell, Laura Mae Melton and Irene Edwards, as well as many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by the light of his life, his daughter, Jessica Liane, and his parents, Jesse Howell, Jr. and Geraldine Smith Howell and grandparents, Andy and May Smith.
